Staff Guidelines

Collegiality

It is in everyone’s best interest and in the interest of the school that we all work to foster productive and respectful working relationships with each other. A working climate where staff are valued and appreciated is necessary in order to provide students with a successful learning experience. Staff has an obligation to establish and uphold a public trust that reflects a strong commitment to student success, to the school and to the professional members of the school.  Any less and we compromise the integrity of all three.

Food and beverages

Eating is to be confined to the staff lounge. Each staff member is expected to pick-up after him/herself and contribute to maintaining a clean lounge area.

Leaving the building (staff)

During the duty day, all staff are required to sign-in and out at the office whenever leaving the building. The office needs to be provided with the following information: name, destination, contact number, and sign-out/in time.

Personal phone calls/cell phone use

Staff are to limited personal calls to non-instructional periods (before/after school, breaks & lunch).

Prep Time

Prep time is to be used in the building for working on school related activities, (e.g., lesson planning, folder preparation, phone calls to parents, meetings with teaching teams, parents and/or the Principal, etc). Please inform the principal or teacher in charge if the need to leave the building arises. Signing-out and signing-in at the office is required.

Smoking

School Board policy prohibits use of tobacco products on school property. Smoking is not allowed on school property.

Staff Meal Accounts - Nutrition Services

To purchase meals from the cafeteria, follow these steps:

1.      Receive a personal identification number (PIN) from the cafeteria staff

2.      Prepay into your account by either (1) Prepay during non-student time or (2) place payment with you name and PIN number written on a money envelope prior to making a purchase; turn in to cafeteria staff. Money transactions during serving times is difficult and interferes with serving students – for this reason, exchanging money during serving times is not permitted.

Note: During student meal times, the cafeteria staff does not want to be slowed down to handle staff money transactions. Please prepay before or after student serving times.

When purchasing a meal, staff go through the line, select their food items, key in their PIN number and exit the line.

Staff Development / request for funds

Staff development funds are available for all licensed staff, Teaching Assistants and Educational Assistants. Request forms to use staff development funds are available from the office staff. Completed request forms are submitted to the chair of the Staff Development committee. The Staff Development committee reviews the request and makes recommendations of approval or denial to administration. Administration has final approval. Notice of approval or denial is placed in the requesting staff person’s mailbox.

All of the staff in the above named job categories are encouraged to take advantage of staff development opportunities. Staff development funds are distributed across several budgets, each with different spending guidelines and requirements. The goal of the committee is equitable distribution of funds amongst all staff and the use of the funds to further advance our students’ academic performance.

Requests need to be approved ahead of time. Allow the committee two or more weeks of advance notice. It is strongly discouraged to seek approval and reimbursement after attending a training opportunity. Under rare, tight circumstances, the committee can be somewhat flexible with short-term notices.

Staff Hiring

When possible interviews to fill staff positions are conducted by representative staff teams and site council members. The principal is responsible for assembling interview teams.

Staff Hours

The teachers’ professional day begins no later than 15 minutes before the start of the school day (Start of staff day: 8:55 AM) and ends no later than 15 minutes after student dismissal (End of staff day: 3:55 PM). Extended time may be required for additional planning and evaluation, faculty and committee meetings, parent conferences, and other professional responsibilities of the teacher.

Teaching Assistants and Educational Assistants follow negotiated hours. A daily sign-in sheet is located at the office. Time reports are due in the office on Wednesday before payday. The hours are not to be totaled by staff. The hours are computed by the Payroll Department.

Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day

-         The District has a policy of honoring the decision of parents/guardians to have their children participate in this event. This practice has been cancelled when it has coincided with testing.

-         Students who do not attend school due to this event need to provide documentation of participation with a parent/guardian. Participation in this event is considered an excused absence from school.

-         A district employee wishing to bring their child to work must inform his/her supervisor in advance of the intent to bring the child to work.

-         The child must be supervised by the district employee at all times.

-         Others in the work/learning environment should forward any questions about the appropriateness of a child’s presence to the program manager or site administrator for consideration.

-         No staff members are permitted to have their minor children on the work site during the hours in which they are scheduled for duty. Exceptions to this rule will be “Take-Your-Daughter and Son-to-School-Day” or by arrangement with the principal.
